GNU/Linux General Statement

GNU/Linux is a good everyday operating system that does not require antivirus, although they are available and can be used effectively in the scanning of email, so malicious files cannot be passed on to a windows user, most operating systems are updated free and once notified you can choose to install updates when you are ready, 98% of the time no restart is necessary.

Examples of everyday GNU/Linux use would be email, social media, general web browsing, music, videos, youtube and plenty more.

Software is available in most software centres and can be installed free! and there's plenty of GNU/Linux applications equivalent to windows programs and work just as well, there will be a learning curve which is a given with any new environment. All applications installed are also updated free! through the distributions update process.

Gaming in GNU/Linux is not as native or well supported as Windows, if your'e a heavy gamer Linux is probably not for you, unless you have a Linux/Windows dual boot situation which is a complex install process, gaming can be achieved in Linux, Steam for example, although not as many games are supported, however the more Steam users in Linux the more the Steam developers will make available it's that simple. Personally I have installed World Of Warcraft in Linux Mint with a sixth generation Intel i7 Quad core (Intel Skull Canyon NUC) running in Wine, which is a free open source compatibilty layer application for Windows programs and achieved good results and a very playable environment considering it used onboard graphics only.

Problem Solving GNU/Linux is one area you will become familiar with as time goes on, and depending on which operating system you choose there will be a community base always willing to lend a hand, having said that, the list of operating systems I have chosen to select from should provide a smooth trouble free environment, but like any operating systems and variable hardware, problems can arise from time to time.

Disclaimer GNU/Linux is not for everybody and you need to be sure it suits your needs, replacing your existing Windows environment also means the loss of all data on your existing machine so the responsibility is on you to be vigilant in backing up your valuable data.

The Cost

A once off payment of $40 for the install and a $10 donation to the chosen operating system
